The Museum's Project Vaccine: Our Best Defense is a key element of our ongoing educational and public health initiative. Learn about vaccines and their development, viral transmission, and the many steps and countless professionals involved in the creation of—and rollout of— vaccines.

Project Vaccine

Step inside and watch a short video about the herculean efforts to develop a COVID-19 vaccine. What are some of the takeaways from the pandemic? What could we do better? How did this pandemic shine a light on still-existing inequities, and how can we prepare for the next one?

Many Vaccines, One Purpose

Videos explore five different types of vaccines—RNA, viral vector, live attenuated, inactivated (killed), and recombinant—and their uses, from the scientists who worked on them. Tactile models illustrate each type.

Take a Stand

In this full-body activity, position yourself along a continuum indicating how strongly you agree or disagree when asked a question about vaccines. Then hear how others have answered the question. Did you change your mind? Learn how your choice compares to those of other visitors.

Stop the Spread

Use a computer model to explore how viruses can spread through a community based on variables such as a virus’s contagion rate, mortality rate, and a community’s vaccination rate. Can you control the spread before the virus mutates and the vaccine is no longer effective?

Managing the Last Mile

Getting a vaccine from production into a person’s arm is complex! Move characters around a tabletop to hear some of them explain their roles in the process.

This exhibition was created by the Museum of Science, Boston, in collaboration with Moment Factory, and was made possible through support provided by the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center.
