BOSTON, MA — As part of its Year of the Earthshot, the Museum of Science, Boston will celebrate the Commonwealth’s environmental leadership at its annual Stars of STEM gala, held on Friday, May 3. The Museum will honor Senator Edward Markey with its President’s Award for his work on the Green New Deal and will also recognize the Healey Administration for its leadership in the climate space.

The annual Stars of STEM gala supports the Museum of Science’s mission to increase the accessibility of STEM education in the Museum, in classrooms, and online. The 2024 event will be hosted by Jeneé Osterheldt, culture columnist at the Boston Globe, and will raise money to support the Museum’s access and belonging initiatives to bring science at the pace of change to everyone, everywhere.

“The impact of Massachusetts’ climate science leadership is truly immeasurable,” said Tim Ritchie, president of the Museum of Science. “This year, we’re celebrating the deep collaboration among sectors that have created historic innovations aimed at mitigating the climate crisis. Leadership from government shows the pace at which our community can respond to urgent needs of the world.”

US Senator Edward Markey will receive the President’s Award for his work “advocating to create an informed science public by addressing climate change through a Green New Deal that supports a 100 percent clean, renewable energy system.” The Healey Administration will also be honored for its groundbreaking climate advocacy work, including the appointment of a Climate Chief and the creation of an Office of Climate Innovation and Resilience within the Governor’s Office, the first in the nation.

Throughout 2024, the Museum of Science, Boston is dedicating its programming—onsite, online, and in classrooms—to the defining science issue of our time: climate change and the climate solutions we need to live more sustainably on Earth. Led by the Museum’s Center for the Environment, Year of the Earthshot is a yearlong climate initiative featuring more than 1,000 programs, and encompasses exhibits, films, digital series, online games, classroom activities, community partnerships, and more, engaging audiences globally.
