Astronauts on the ISS often develop space-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS), where fluid shifts toward the head cause swelling in the optic disc and even reshape the eye itself, leading to vision problems. NASA is currently testing whether applying pressure to the lower body can rebalance that fluid flow and protect astronauts’ eyesight. As we look toward longer missions to Mars, solving SANS is crucial for keeping vision sharp in space.
