Can Blue Sharks Change Color?

Scientists studying Blue Sharks and their tooth-like scales, called dermal denticles, found pressure-sensitive crystals that reflect light differently depending on depth. As the sharks dive deeper, the crystals compress, shifting their shimmer from green or gold to brilliant blue. This kind of crystal-based color change could one day inspire eco-friendly materials, but first, researchers hope to spot it happening in the wild.
