Rising with Nature:

Building Resilient Coastal Communities

In this interactive program you will discuss the social, economic, and environmental impacts of sea level rise and the tradeoffs of proposed resilience strategies.

Climate change is reshaping our coasts and our communities. Extreme storms, rising seas, and ever-increasing development pressures along the coast are forcing us to face some tough decisions about our future. Luckily, there are teams of scientists, community members, policymakers, artists, and more working together to ask a revolutionary question: what if we could make things better for both people and nature?

Join us in this interactive program by diving into the complexities of coastal planning and exploring ways to get involved in shaping the future of our coast. You’ll work as a group to join a planning team for a fictional coastal community and be introduced to nature-based solutions and managed retreat as the way forward for our coasts and communities. Following the discussion, you will have the opportunity to speak with organizations who are actively working on coastal resilience solutions in Boston.

Building a shared vision for this future takes all of us:

  • Scientists, to help us understand the risks we face and the ways potential solutions will shape those risks

  • Policy experts, funding experts, construction and engineering experts, and others to understand what it will take to implement these projects

  • Artists, musicians, writers, and other creatives to help us see and feel what this future could be

  • Above all, we need the voices of the people who live, work, and play along the coast to create a strong vision for what solutions make sense and what the future can look like in the places they call home.

None of us can do this alone. Together we find a way.

The Center for the Environment is proud to present this program in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy.

Light refreshments and cash bar will open at 6:00pm.

This event is free, thanks to the generosity of the Lowell Institute.
