Songs from Beloved King: A Queer Bible Musical

Celebrate the release of the EP Songs from Beloved King: A Queer Bible Musical, a faithfully adapted queer Bible musical created by playwright, scholar, and minister, J. Sylvan. Beloved King follows the young shepherd David as he is thrust from rural fields into the royal court. He finds himself the object of affection of both the heir to the throne, idealistic Prince Jonathan, and his father, the domineering King Saul, forcing him to re-navigate his relationship to love and power as he tries to follow the path laid out for him by a mysterious entity called God.

While studying as a Ministry Fellow at Harvard, Sylvan became fascinated with the artistry and history of the Bible and its queer interpretations, specifically the story of young King David and his relationships in the books of Samuel. The text, as well as the many attested queer readings of it, inspired them to write Beloved King, originally presented in workshop form as a master thesis at Harvard.

During the pandemic, Sylvan teamed up with their wife, music director Sue Buzzard, and orchestrator and arranger Brandon Jackson to arrange six of the twenty original songs in the show for release this fall as Songs from Beloved King: A Queer Bible Musical.

This evening—at the intersection of religion, identity, and the human experience— features a live band and the original singers performing each tune, interspersed with conversations on the inspiration and origins of the songs. The themes of identity found in the Bible, and how current societal dialogue around these themes and the shared experiences of the queer community can be traced throughout human history, are also addressed.

“Certainly, a sweeping story that fits the reputation of the Old Testament and certainly approached in a way that captures the imagination of a modern audience... A very smart concept show with a bright future.” - Broadway World

“When Sylvan speaks on these Biblical stories, what they give to those listening is unmistakably holy, and it is difficult not to see what Sylvan sees.” - WBUR, Boston’s NPR Station
