Frequently Asked Questions
How will I know where to check in along the route?
All climbers will be given a map of the route that is marked with the specific check-in locations. These places will be staffed by volunteers wearing the official climb t-shirts. They will be able to help you with any questions during the day.
Approximately how long will it take to complete my climb?
Double climbers hike up the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail to the summit, down Tuckerman Ravine to Pinkham notch, then repeat the route in reverse to end back at the start of the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail. This will take about 12 hours and 45 minutes.
Single climbers hiking up the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail to the summit then back down to the starting point can expect their hike to last 6 hours and 20 minutes.
My family wants to be there at the finish line. Where should they go?
All Washburn Climb activities start and end the Ammonoosuc Ravine trailhead. A Museum of Science staff member will be there at all times and can let your family know when you are on your final descent.
I would prefer to make a donation rather than fundraise from others. Is that OK?
Yes! The minimum fundraising requirements for each type of climb are set on a "raise from others or donate money yourself" basis. If you would like to donate, simply click on your name on our website, or mail a check noting in the memo line that it is for your 2010 Washburn Climb.
Can I climb with my children?
Participation in the Washburn Climb is limited to adults age 18 and over.
Can I take part in the climb without fundraising?
Yes, if you'd like to volunteer as a spotter along the trail. More information: 617-589-4208.
If I sign up for the double climb but can't complete it, what happens?
There is also a single climb. You can change the type of climb you are undertaking by checking in with one of our volunteers on the mountain. Our volunteers can also help you down the mountain if necessary. Safety is our priority!
