Located on the Antarctic Peninsula on the relatively mild waters
just south of the Chilean coast, Palmer Station is a small facility
established in 1965. Meteorology and studies of the atmosphere,
glaciology, and geology are all pursued at Palmer Station. Since the
wildlife in the surrounding area is so abundant the site is
especially suited for studies of birds, seals, and other species that
make up the marine ecosystem.
Only about 43 people live and work at the station during summer
and 20 or more in winter. There is ship access year-round with
foreign tour ships making frequent visits during the summer months.
Living conditions are comfortable but crowded, with facilities
similar to a small hotel or college dorm.
There is no live television or radio programming available on the
station but videos are available. Other recreation activities include
a small exercise room and pool table. Cross-country skiing and
boating are popular ways to get out and enjoy the local wildlife.
