Byrd Surface Camp

The carpenters were responsible for building the camp, putting together the ITASE shelters and building the Ice Core Freezer Box. ITASE team having dinner at Byrd Surface Camp. The train consists of the Tucker Snocat, a sled containing twenty 55-gallon drums of fuel along with cargo, a shelter used as a science area, a small sled with the ice core drill, an outhouse, and finally, spare parts for the vehicles. Behind the Tucker is a sled containing an insulated box for holding ice cores and cargo on top of the box. Behind the core sled is a shelter for cooking and eating. In the Field

Taking samples in a snow pit requires meticulous work and Markus collecting air samples for analysis Gordon Hamilton with one of his automatic Wearing plastic golves, the team carefully removes the sample from the core barrel. Benjamin and Zach carefully slide the ice core into a plastic sleeve in preparation for storage. Mark Wumkes carefully checks over the drill which has been stored at Byrd Surface Camp since the 2000 field season. Paul and Mark prepare to position the drill upright. Shackleton's Hut
