Quinsigamond Community College activities:
Last year QCC ran a number of successful events for engineering
technology including an exploration day for high school students. The
college also convened a taskforce of high school and college educators to
identify obstacles and supports for students transitioning from high
school into a college engineering/technology program. The findings of this
taskforce are applied in this years goals and objectives for strengthening
enrollment and retention for incoming engineering and technology students.
January through April 2007:QCC will be working with the
partner high schools (Burncoat Senior High School, Doherty Memorial High
School, Worcester Technical High School, and Tantasqua Regional High School)
to complete the programs of study with five specific associate-degree
programs: Computer systems Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology,
Electromechanical Technology, Basic Engineering, Manufacturing Technology).
The final product will be a completed program of study for at least one
engineering/technology pathway per school.
QCC will also convene a faculty team consisting of engineering, science,
and mathematics reps, will be conducting research and a feasibility study on
the development of an "engineering projects/design & build" type of course
that could be used as a laboratory science elective and a "recruitment" tool
of sorts to engage
undecided or general studies students in one of the engineering or applied
engineering/technology disciplines. The final product will be a brief white
paper that summarizes the research and puts forth a recommended strategy for
course development and implementation.
In March/April 2007 (date TBA), QCC will conduct a hands-on
engineering/technology outreach/recruitment event for middle school and high
school science and mathematics teachers in the region.
