Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Advancement, and working closely with President and Director, Ioannis Miaoulis, and other senior leaders, the Director will drive the Museum’s corporate, foundation and government funding strategies and relationships. The Director will be responsible for leading a well-supported team in the identification, research, cultivation, and solicitation of grants and sponsorships, particularly from top tier national and regional foundations and corporations As a member of the advancement division’s senior management team and other Museum committees, the Director will play a key role in achieving campaign and other strategic institutional goals, managing high-level internal and external relationships, managing staff, and deepening a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization and its constituencies. The Director will also oversee grant stewardship, ensuring compliance with funding guidelines and accurate, timely reporting.
Position Summary
Under the direction of Joan Hadly, Senior Vice President, Advancement since 2008, the Museum has built a sophisticated, fully integrated Advancement Division which includes departments for: Annual Fund, CF&G, Data Management Services, Advancement Communications, Research and Operations, Special Events and Leadership and Planned Giving.Ms. Hadly, an experienced partner of Museum leadership, has strategically managed the growth of the division, building best-practices more frequently encountered in larger shops. The incoming Director will be one of three Advancement management personnel reporting directly to Ms. Hadly, who in turn is one of four members of the senior management team reporting directly to the President and Director, Ioannis Miaoulis. The Director will oversee a staff of seven and will be responsible for driving the CF&G team in a three-fold effort to secure funding from foundations, corporations and government sources.
The Director will be expected to proactively build and sustain collaborative relationships with prospects and donors, corporate executives, elected officials, and Museum principal investigators and colleagues. PIs and senior managers have expressed sincere appreciation for the quality of the Advancement Division and the importance of collaborating with the incoming Director to develop fundraising opportunities. The Director is expected to bring strong management experience and significant achievements identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding seven-figure philanthropic commitments.
The Director will play a role in the completion of the Museum’s Campaign and other initiatives, manage the CF&G unit and collaborate with other Advancement Directors in deepening a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization. As a member of the Museum’s Grants Planning Committee, the Director will provide strategic management, planning, and grant writing to program leaders regarding institutional funding opportunities. As a member of the Museum’s Management Committee, the Director will work with key staff to prepare proposals and budgets for programs and exhibits. The Director also serves in a small group that supports the Museum’s President and Director on federal government relationships and related projects. This role supports knowledge and insights into funding priorities and issues for federal progress (e.g. NSF, NASA, etc.). The Director will also work closely with the President, supporting the President’s institutional relationship initiatives.
The Director will join an accomplished, collegial senior team that has consistently embraced a leadership role in the Museum and education communities. Responsible for managing and mentoring a team, the Director should also be an effective spokesperson for the Museum, with drive to deliver against challenging goals, and have proven ability to establish and manage complex relationships. Proven success securing significant grants from top national foundations, as well as the National Science Foundation is highly desirable. Successful candidates will demonstrate the strategic, leadership, and management skills necessary to work with high-level supporters and senior management to achieve the Museum’s ambitious objectives.
Responsibilities
- Manage institutional research, cultivation, and solicitation of corporations, foundations, and government agencies to meet annual and campaign goals
- Actively manage a portfolio of high-level relationships with top institutional prospects
- Drive analysis and strategy to enhance and expand programs in order to increase revenue and build new relationships
- Work closely with members of the Museum’s Strategic Projects Group, Management Committee, senior program staff, and other divisions in the identification, strategic development, and execution of funding opportunities
- Establish and manage relationships with government agencies and elected officials and support the President and Director on government related projects (exclusive of lobbying)
- Partner with Trustees and Overseers to leverage their institutional connections with foundations and others
- Prepare and oversee proposals to ensure quality, alignment with the Museum’s priorities, compliance with funding guidelines, and timely submission
- Supervise the corporate annual giving program, including memberships, sponsorships, and gifts
- Manage the stewardship of grants and sponsorships, including financial reporting and compliance with funding guidelines
- Collaborate with major gifts team
- Lead, motivate, and supervise the Corporate, Foundation and Corporate Relations team
Minimum Qualifications
- Appreciation of the Museum’s mission and the ability to effectively communicate it
- Minimum 10 years development experience with a track record of restricted and unrestricted institutional fundraising in a complex organization
- Demonstrated success identifying, cultivating, closing, and stewarding seven-figure gifts from national foundations and government agencies
- Experience partnering with senior management and working collaboratively in a complex organization to develop funding proposals and strategies
- Ability to strategically link institution and programmatic initiatives with opportunities for fundraising
- Ability to create and implement strategy to guide program growth, expand funding sources, leverage existing prospects, and build sustainable organizational partnerships
- Knowledge of and ability to oversee complex fundraising infrastructure, research, tracking, and reporting systems, including grant stewardship, compliance, and reporting
- Ability to serve as an effective, knowledgeable spokesperson for the Museum and its programs with high-level executives and public officials
- Exceptional writing skills with the ability to produce effective, compelling proposals, especially facile communicating scientific and technological subject matter
- Experience with federal grant process, specifically the National Science Foundation (NSF) and/or the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and/or National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
- Ability to manage, mentor, and motivate a team, while ensuring accountability
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (written and verbal)

This position full-time, 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday.
Salary
Exempt (Salaried). Commensurate with experience.
