The Lectures & Special Programs team at the Museum of Science produces cutting edge programming to attract new and existing adult audiences. Our programs feature high profile academics, researchers, scientists, artists, and technology experts in an effort to provide educational, social and exciting experiences for diverse adult-based audiences. Program formats vary and appeal to a wide variety of potential audience members. With a small staff, our department offers interns invaluable experience and hands-on involvement. Interns contribute to the research, implementation and promotion of our programs; participate in all aspects of event preparation, production and evaluation; and assist us in the development of, and outreach to, new adult audiences.invaluable experience and hands-on involvement. Position Summary

The Lectures & Special Programs intern will be a versatile team player who wants to be exposed to the grassroots outreach, pre-production, and implementation of lectures and special programs. The position is an opportunity to be involved in many aspects of program development and production, as well as to be involved in the cultivation of, and outreach to, new adult audiences. During the fall 2013 season, we will focus on programs that honor the opening of the Hall of Human Life, the Museum’s new permanent exhibit on human biology, and programs that enhance the traveling exhibition Dead Sea Scrolls: Life in Ancient Times.

Responsibilities

- • Research potential targeted audiences for lecture/special program topics and collect contact information
• Assist in the creation of grassroots marketing strategies and promotional materials
• Coordinate mailings and flyer distribution, and assist in maintenance of audience database
• Assist in logistics planning and communications for events
• Assist in preparation of program notes and introductory remarks
• Assist in program production
• Assist in evaluation of programs
• Other responsibilities as needed and appropriate

Minimum Qualifications

- Organizational abilities, writing and oral communication skills, and computer/internet literacy are essential
- Highly organized, detail oriented and responsible self-starter
- Must be able to take initiative and be a problem solver
- Excellent customer service skills
- A sense of adventure and the ability to work well as a team member
- Energetic, articulate, friendly and creative

Additional Details

Hours / Days Per Week

16 – 24 hours per week —Wednesdays a must. Work during seven evening and one weekend afternoon programs will be required.
