Ms. Cathy Clemens
CfA

Ms. Clemens holds a B. A. in Fine Arts from Boston College and a B. S. in Physics and a M.S. in Astronomy from the University of Arizona. She has conducted research in radio, infrared and optical astronomy in the fields of cometary and planetary science, star formation and cosmology. Since 1998, she has served as Coordinator for the Boston Chapter of Project ASTRO -- a collaborative project of the Museum of Science (MOS) and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). During the past four years, she has fostered, trained, and supervised more than 90 partnerships between volunteer astronomers (including herself) and K-12 teachers. Through these partnerships, the scientists and educators are given training, and then are assigned to work together in the classroom implementing hands-on learning activities in space science.

More recently, Cathy has begun Family Astro which concentrates on partnering astronomers with community leaders. Cathy has also worked directly with astronomer mentors to bring students a love of science in general and a better understanding of scientific processes. Ms. Clemens has developed a solid network among 60+ schools in 40+ school systems in the Greater Boston Area, Rhode Island, and southern New Hampshire. Her strong people skills have led to synergistic working relationships with other E/PO areas in NASA and the CfA, thereby amplifying her efforts with Project ASTRO, Family ASTRO, and NESSIE.
