Fall Hands-On Lab Interpretation Intern

The Interpretation Program offers hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences for Museum visitors throughout the Exhibit Halls. Our goal is to guide visitors in investigations that encourage them to develop the skills of scientific inquiry and engineering design. The Hands-On Laboratory program invites visitors to explore a wide range of topics in laboratory science and engineering using laboratory tools and techniques.

The Intern will work with Interpretation staff and volunteers to provide Interpretation programming for the Hands-On Laboratory in the Suit-Cabot Lab. The Intern will also assist Youth Programs staff in supporting a crew of volunteers from the Fenway High School, a pilot school committed to providing job-readiness skills through institutional partnerships. The Intern will have an opportunity to develop a new program activity or enhance a component of an existing activity.

Responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming environment for learning by engaging visitors with enthusiasm and responsiveness to their needs and interests.
  • Guide visitors in investigations and challenges that promote the development of science inquiry and engineering design skills.
  • Assist with laboratory set-up and clean-up and help maintain a safe lab environment
  • Engage in on-going professional development and background research in order to learn a variety of programs and ensure that your supporting information is accurate and relevant.
  • Assist in the training and support of the program's volunteers to assure adequate facilitation of laboratory activity stations. Assist with development project for Fenway High School Volunteers.
  • Work with Program Manager and Coordinators on an intern project, which may involve the development of new or augmented program activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Interest in informal science education
  • Undergraduate student, graduate student, or career changer with a background in the Natural Sciences or Archaeology preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • High level of initiative, enthusiasm, and self-direction
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to work with a variety of age groups, including school groups and families

Additional Details

Hours / Days Per Week

10 - 14 hours per week, Tuesdays and Thursdays

Compensation

$8.00 - $8.25 per hour

Duration

Fall 2013 September/October - December
