The unique outer shell of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) protects the virus and has prevented design of a vaccine. Now scientists at the National Institutes of Health have successfully determined the structure of the outer shell protein in its native form. Studying the shape and movement of this protein may finally lead to a vaccine against HIV.
