September 20, 2007
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and by 2010, it is estimated to be the leading cause of death in developing countries as well.
Unfortunately, the heart is one of the least regenerative organs in the body, and loss of heart muscle often leads to heart failure. In this report, hear how researchers at the University of Washington are creating heart muscle cells from human embryonic stem cells and then transplanting the new cells into rats with weak hearts.
