NanoDays 2012

Special Program [Return to listing page]

Imagine, discover, and explore a world that's too small to see. NanoDays is a nationwide celebration of nanoscale science, and you're invited! Come celebrate with us and enjoy nano-related activities throughout the Exhibit Halls, including these special events:

The Amazing Nano Brothers Juggling Show! Join virtuoso jugglers, Dan and Joel, as they provide a comic and unforgettable introduction to atoms, molecules, and nanoscale forces while juggling everything from baseball bats to potted plants—even while atop seven-foot unicycles! 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. 40 minutes. Cahners Theater

Explore Hands-on Nano Have fun exploring nanoscience concepts with scientists from Harvard University, Northeastern University, the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, and the University of New Hampshire. 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Blue Wing, Lower Level

Special Guest Presentations Watch live presentations by leading researchers in the field of nanotechnology, and learn how they use nanotechnology to tackle real-world engineering problems. 30 minutes each. Topics and speakers include:

11:30 a.m. Carbon Nanomaterials: A Toolbox for Tomorrow's Needs by Nicola Ferralis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

12:30 p.m. Is Nano a Problem? by Chris Bosso, Northeastern University

1:30 p.m. Glucose Nanosensors: There's an App for That! by Heather Clark, Northeastern University

2:30 p.m. Engineering Medical Treatments One Nano-Layer at a Time by Paula Hammond, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Nanotech in Our Lives Think nanotechnology is limited to the lab? Think again. Try out nanotech-enhanced products already on the market, and learn about the science that makes them work! Exhibitors include: Konarka, Nanocomp Technologies, Raytheon, and Seldon Technologies. 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Blue Wing, Lower Level

Discover Nano in Nature Learn about the tiny nanostructures that give beautiful colors to butterfly wings and self-cleaning properties to leaves. 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Butterfly Garden, Blue Wing, Level 2

You're the Nanoscientist! Visit our hands-on laboratory to explore nanoscale science and engineering through hands-on activities and learn how nanoscientists are creating new materials and technologies. 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Suit/Cabot Lab, Red Wing, Lower Level

Live Animal Show — Geckos: Nano in Nature Learn about these amazing creatures and how tiny nanostructures on their feet help them climb and inspire engineers to create new materials. 1:30 p.m. Shapiro Family Science Live! Stage, Green Wing, Lower Level

Build Cool Models! Help build a giant balloon model of a carbon nanotube and make your own personal buckyball to take home. 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Lobby and Blue Wing, Lower Level

Intro to Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine Visit this permanent exhibit to learn the basics behind this new and emerging field of nanotechnology, and explore nanotechnology's vast potential for diagnosing and treating disease. Blue Wing, Lower Level

NanoDays at the Museum of Science is sponsored by the Center for High-rate Nanomanufacturing headquartered at Northeastern University and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell; by the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center headquartered at Harvard University; by the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network headquartered at the Museum of Science; and by QSTORM: Switchable Quantum Dots & Adaptive Optics for Super-Resolution Imaging, a National Science Foundation-funded collaborative research project.
