Engineering is Elementary® is hosting its First Invited Symposium on June 3rd and 4th, 2010!

As our project has grown over the past several years, it’s been fascinating to hear your individual stories of successes and challenges with EiE. By bringing you all together, we hope this symposium will be a collaborative learning opportunity that encourages us to benefit from each others’ projects, pathways, and results.

We’re inviting key EiE collaborators nationwide who have organized and offered EiE programming in their region. Once we know who can attend, we will follow up to discuss the best formats for you to share your work; we envision many interactive experiences. It should be an exciting and interesting event!

During a two-day interactive, workshop-style program:

  • Share your EiE experiences
  • Learn from colleagues about their efforts
  • Discuss new ideas, challenges, and opportunities
  • Engage with two EiE units:
    • Now You’re Cooking: Designing Solar Ovens (Green Engineering)
    • Taking the Plunge: Designing Submersibles (Ocean Engineering)

Focal topics include:

  • Professional development
  • Preservice teacher education
  • Research and evaluation projects
  • Whole school/district conversions & adoptions
  • After-school and out-of-school programs

  • Thursday, June 3rd: 2 New EiE Units and Evening Reception & Dinner (9:00am - 7:30pm)
Because we have heard that people are interested in learning more about our newest units, we’ll kick off this symposium on June 3rd with a workshop featuring two units: “Taking the Plunge: Designing Submersibles” (Ocean/Ocean Engineering) and “Now You’re Cooking: Designing Solar Ovens” (Green Engineering).

  • Friday, June 4th: Sharing Our EiE Experiences (9:00am - 3:00pm)
We’ll use a variety of formats to have participants share what they’ve done, hear from others, network, and possibly discuss future projects.

Attendance Requirements:

  • Experience with Engineering is Elementary as related to focal topics
  • Willingness to share your experiences in presentation or roundtable discussion

Costs:

  • $150** registration for the program covers the 5 meals (2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 1 dinner)
  • Your travel and hotel expenses. We have blocked a group of rooms at a discounted Museum rate ($309) for the Hampton Inn Boston/Cambridge (www.BostonCambridge.HamptonInn.com or 617-494-5300). The group code for these rooms is C-MOS. They must be booked by April 28th to get the reduced rate. Cancellations after April 30th will still be charged full room rate.

(**After May 7th, 2010 registration fee is $250 for late registrants and non-refundable for all registrants.)

Because we want to ensure that participants have been actively engaged with EiE, this symposium is by invitation. However, if you have a colleague who is eligible and interested, please feel free to forward this email. On the registration site, they will have the opportunity to explain what they have done and then be issued an invitation.

The symposium has a small registration fee that covers the costs of 5 meals. Travel and hotel expenses and arrangements are the responsibility of the participant, although we have reserved a block of rooms at the Museum discounted rate. Please see the attached flyer for more details and registration information.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Gretchen Fougere at gfougere@mos.org or (508) 728-5358.

We hope you can join us!
