Engineering is Elementary: Teaching Science with Applications
Saturday, March 28
This set of workshops is part of an EiE study that evaluates how students' understanding of science is affected by participation in the EiE curriculum. Sign up as a delayed field test teacher for the study, and become eligible to participate in your choice of two of the three workshops.
The workshops will focus on how to teach science in conjunction with applications in engineering and technology, using the EiE curriculum. Two workshops are held in the morning, and one is in the afternoon (topics will be assigned to times based on interest). The topics are:
> The Science of Plants and Designing Plant Packages
> The Solar System and Designing Parachutes
> Energy and Designing a Solar Oven
To learn more about the study and to sign up as a delayed field test teacher, follow the links below.
Please Note: Participants must complete the requirements for at least one delayed field test. Before the workshop begins, each participant must teach one of the focus science topics to their students: plants, the solar system, or energy. Each participant must collect assessments of their students' understanding of science and engineering before and after teaching the science unit(s). Participants must NOT teach EiE to their students during this time! Each participant must also complete surveys about their background, science teaching, and class demographics.
Participants will receive $50 and an EiE teacher's guide for each science topic they teach and assess. Additional stipends are available for delayed field testing in additional classes. Participants are also eligible to collect further stipends if they choose to teach EiE after the workshop.
