Summer Teacher-In-Residence Positions
July 9 - August 10
Looking for a new way to stay connected during your vacation? Spend this summer at the Museum of Science as a Teacher-in-Residence. Learn from our staff and share your knowledge of formal learning environments, get a behind-the-scenes perspective of the Museum, and serve as a liaison between the Museum and your school or district.
As a Teacher-in-Residence, you will collaborate on a relevant Museum project, participate in a weekly seminar, and work on an independent project of your choice.
Choose to work five 6-hour days or four 7-1/2-hour days each week. During the school year, you are also expected to work an additional 24 hours to research and develop a product determined by you and your Museum partner. All participants must also attend a call-back meeting scheduled for early December. Although we are not able to offer housing, we do offer stipends of $3,000.
We will begin accepting applications on March 1, 2012. Positions will include:
> Genzyme Sabbatical Follow-Up
Seeking Genzyme Teacher Sabbatical alumni who are interested in investing significant time toward development of an action plan inspired by their sabbatical experience. In addition to preparing to carry out their action plan back at school, these teachers would contribute to development of short, content-based workshops to be offered by the Educator Resource Center.
> Math and Engineering is Elementary® (EiE®)
Seeking two upper elementary school teachers who have used the Engineering is Elementary curriculum produced by the Museum of Science. Teachers will work to integrate math lessons into the science, technology, and engineering topics highlighted in the curriculum.
> Math in the Museum
Seeking a teacher who is interested in developing a three-hour professional development mathematics workshop for use in the upper elementary/middle grades. The teacher involved in this project will help prepare and co-facilitate a workshop that will integrate STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) topics with Museum exhibits and activities. In addition, participants will create and pilot web-based resources including field trip guides and focusing activity sheets for students.
> Urban Advantage Boston
The Boston Public School (BPS) Science Department will select two or three middle school science teachers currently using the BPS Science Department kits and interested in helping create related community resource maps. This summer's project will focus on connecting learning experiences available in and beyond the Museum with selected BPS Science middle school kits, proposing potential starting points for related student-driven inquiry projects, and contributing to the design and facilitation of associated professional development workshops.
> Live Presentations
Seeking a teacher to help the Live Presentations team better meet the needs of field trip students on the autism spectrum. As part of the project team, the teacher will review presentations and suggest improvements such as props, activities and/or behavioral management strategies. The teacher will present work to staff and will also bring students on a field trip in early fall to try out an augmented presentation. Preference will be given to teachers with special needs certification and multiple years of experience with students on the autism spectrum.
> Exhibit Investigations
Seeking an upper elementary or middle school teacher to develop programming for the new Exhibit Investigations school program. The teacher will spend some time in the Exhibit Halls, providing hands-on activities for museum visitors, and will work collaboratively with the team of Exhibit Investigations staff to develop new programming materials. The participating teacher may also help co-facilitate a professional development workshop in the fall.
Teacher-in-Residence opportunities are made possible through generous support from the Genzyme Corporation, Corbett Family Trust, Liberty Mutual, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
