Dynamic Life Fall Teachers Series

October 6, 13, and 27, 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.

This series combines a presentation on a life science topic with related Museum resources including exhibits, collections, laboratories, and staff to engage teachers in adult learning that supports teaching complex topics in biology.

Middle school life science teachers are invited to gather for a series of three Wednesday afternoon professional meetings focused on ecology, human biology, and genetics and evolution. Each topic connects to a specific middle school life science standard. The afternoon concludes with a collegial discussion about classroom connections.

Tentative Program:

Sickle Cell Anemia and Natural Selection, Dr. Elinor Karlsson, Broad Institute. Related Framework: Give examples of how genetic variation and environmental factors are causes of evolution and the diversity of organisms.

Toxic Traffic, David Sittenfeld, Forum program, Museum of Science. Related Framework: Identify ways in which ecosystems have changed throughout geologic time in response to physical conditions, interactions among organisms, and the actions of humans.

Researching the Brain, Holly Manigan, PING Research Program, Mass General Hospital. Related Framework: Identify the general functions of the major systems of the human body (digestion, respiration, reproduction, circulation, excretion, protection from disease, and movement, control, and coordination) and describe ways that these systems interact with each other.

Applicants should plan to attend all three meetings and complete an assessment assignment. Those successfully completing the program receive ten Massachusetts professional development points.

This program is being developed in partnership with the Cambridge Science Department and is made possible through the Genzyme Biotechnology Education Initiative.
