Dynamic Life Institute: Bread, Cells & Biotechnology
July 20 - 24
Using the resources of the Museum of Science, including exhibits, collections, laboratories, and staff, teachers engage in adult learning that supports teaching complex topics in biology. The institute includes substantial time for in-depth activities, curriculum discussions, and project planning. Teachers participate in content-based activities in environments that explore the evidence, tools, and techniques of scientific investigation.
This summer, middle school teachers explore yeast as a bio-system and how the process of bread making can be used to demonstrate biotechnology principles as well as support the learning of classical life science concepts. Learn how these same principals apply to current research and manufacturing in the biotech industry. In addition, observe middle school students participating in a summer course with the same content. The group reconvenes for a call back on Saturday, January 9, 2010.
Daily homework assignments include readings and writing a reflective journal, approximately one hour combined. Free parking and morning coffee provided. Participants receive 36 PDPs upon successful completion of course work. There is no cost, however, successful applicants are asked to make a good faith guarantee to pay a $100 cancelation fee should the participant drop out with less than 3 weeks notice.
Applications accepted until May 14. Participants will be notified of their status on or before May 18.
This program is made possible with funding through the Genzyme Biotechnology Education Initiative.
