What's Green Chemistry?

John Warner, director, president, and CTO of the Warner Babcock Institute, and Amy Cannon, co-founder and executive director of the Beyond Benign Foundation, start off the day with a 50-minute lecture that relates science to students' lives. John introduces students to the concepts of green chemistry with real-world industrial examples of sustainable practices, materials and products. Amy highlights women and minority contributions to science. Both discuss the interrelated nature of science, consumerism, our environment, and how our choices affect the quality of our lives.
Following the presentation, students can take part in hands-on experiments based on current research being conducted in local universities and companies. Scientists from the Warner Babcock Institute, Beyond Benign, the Museum of Science, Simmons College, Bridgewater State, Gordon College, and Suffolk University also provide a wide selection of experiments that demonstrate basic principles — and cutting-edge sustainable science.
Note: Due to the nature of the funding, this lecture is open only to Massachusetts school groups.
