Poetry in the Museum

A Sample Activity for Exhibit Halls

This is an activity that requires students to make careful observations and chose specific language to describe those observations. It is a fun and simple way to connect science and language arts.

You Will Need:

Twenty index cards per group, a pad of paper, and a marker or pen for each group.

What to Do:

Choose an exhibit or object that interests your group. One that is in a quiet area and is easy to gather around will work best.

Ask one or two of the students to act as a recorder. The recorders need the cards and the markers.

Ask the group to come up with words that describe the exhibit. The recorders will write one word on each card for their group. They need a good mixture of nouns, adverbs and adjectives.

When the class has come up with about 20 words, lay all the cards out on the floor and have the students move the cards in lines to create a free-form poem. Not all the words have to be used.

When they are satisfied with their poem it should be written on the pad and read aloud.

Variations:

1. Different groups of students can work at different exhibits. When they return to class, students can compare poems and try to guess which exhibits they are describing.

2. Groups of students can use the same exhibit at different times and compare the poems that each wrote.

3. To save time, words can be collected at the Museum and the poems can be created back at school.
