StarLab Portable Planetarium

Discover how the relationships between the Earth, Moon, and Sun cause the phases of the Moon as well as solar and lunar eclipses. Observe the plane of our galaxy, the Milky Way, in the model sky, and learn why it looks the way it does. Explore galaxies outside our own, and see just how big and far away they really are. Learn how looking into deep space gives us a glimpse into the history of the universe.

The Starlab portable planetarium brings a dark, cloudless night sky to your school during the daytime. These programs present a realistic model of the night sky over your school's town on the date that we visit. With the addition of video images and simulations, students will get an up-close look at some of the most distant objects that can be seen from Earth.

Capacity: 1 class (25 students plus teacher) per presentation; 2 to 8 presentations per day.

Schedule: Available during school hours, Monday - Friday

Requirements: An empty 25' x 25' x 11' space to inflate each Starlab (2 - 4 presentations per day uses one, 5 - 8 presentations per day requires two).

Primary Connections:

MA Science and Technology/Engineering Framework (2006)
(Massachusetts)

  • Earth and Space Science > 10 The Earth in the Solar System (Grade: 6 – 8)
Compare and contrast properties and conditions of objects in the solar system (i.e., sun, planets, and moons) to those on Earth (i.e., gravitational force, distance from the sun, speed, movement, temperature, and atmospheric conditions).
  • Earth and Space Science > 08 The Earth in the Solar System (Grade: 6 – 8)
Recognize that gravity is a force that pulls all things on and near the earth toward the center of the earth. Gravity plays a major role in the formation of the planets, stars, and solar system and in determining their motions.
  • Earth and Space Science > 11 The Earth in the Solar System (Grade: 6 – 8)
Explain how the tilt of the earth and its revolution around the sun result in an uneven heating of the earth, which in turn causes the seasons.
  • Earth and Space Science > 12 The Earth in the Solar System (Grade: 6 – 8)
Recognize that the universe contains many billions of galaxies, and that each galaxy contains many billions of stars.
