Motion: Speed, Velocity & Acceleration

Students learn to distinguish among speed, velocity, and acceleration while exploring the unexpected motion of everyday objects. Watch a pencil accelerate to over 100 mph in a fraction of a second, grasp the concept of gravitational acceleration with the help of crashing metal plates, knock a moving target out of the air using a powerful air cannon, and make suggestions for altering the design of a medieval siege engine.

Capacity: 8 classes (200 students) per presentation; 1 to 2 presentations per day.

Schedule: Available during school hours, Monday - Friday.

Space / Special Requirements: Gym / auditorium / cafeteria or other assembly-appropriate space.

Primary Connections:

MA Science and Technology/Engineering Framework (2006)
(Massachusetts)

  • Technology/Engineering > 2.1 Engineering Design (Grade: 6 – 8)
Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process, i.e., identify the need or problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s), construct a prototype, test and evaluate, communicate the solution(s), and redesign.
  • Technology/Engineering > 2.0 Engineering Design (Grade: 6 – 8)
Broad Concept: Engineering design is an iterative process involving modeling and optimizing for developing technological solutions to problems within given constraints.
  • Physical Sciences (Chemistry and Physics) > 01 Properties of Matter (Grade: 6 – 8)
Differentiate between weight and mass, recognizing that weight is the amount of gravitational pull on an object.
  • Physical Sciences (Chemistry and Physics) > 12 Motion of Objects (Grade: 6 – 8)
Graph and interpret distance vs. time graphs for constant speed.
  • Physical Sciences (Chemistry and Physics) > 11 Motion of Objects (Grade: 6 – 8)
Explain and give examples of how the motion of an object can be described by its position, direction of motion, and speed.
