Early Learners' Guide to the Museum of Science
A highlight of exhibits that are enjoyed by children 8 years of age and younger - visiting the exhibits in the following order minimizes backtracking.
Live Animal Viewing Window (Basement, Red Wing) – a peek into the Museum's Live Animal Center, where our collection of insects, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians reside. You may even see the Museum's staff preparing meals for the inhabitants.
New England Habitats (First Floor, Green Wing) – enjoy the sights, sounds and even smells in these life-size dioramas of local animal mounts in their natural habitats.
Human Body Connection (Second Floor, Green Wing) – a biology discovery space about YOU and staffed by volunteers. Features a chick hatchery and cotton-top tamarin enclosure along with a wide variety of activities to help you discover how your body works and how you measure up to other people who've explored the exhibit.
Beyond the X-Ray (Second Floor, Green Wing) – this exhibit about medical technologies features "Guess the X-ray," where young children can look at X-rays of everyday objects and familiar animals and assemble a skeleton puzzle to see how our bodies are put together.
Cahners Computer Place (First Floor, Blue Wing)– a computer and technology discovery space, staffed by volunteers. This interactive exhibit includes an Early Learners area, especially for your youngest tech users, and "Best Software for Kids" programs at many computers. The exhibit also features exploration activities at the "Info Bytes" counter and the opportunity to interact with AIBO (a robot dog).
Dinosaurs: Modeling the Mesozoic (Basement, Blue Wing)- always a favorite with real fossils, dinosaur models and lots of hands-on activities. Compare the size of your foot and head to a life size Tyrannosaurus Rex model.
Natural Mysteries and A Bird's World (Basement, Green Wing) – explore the Museum's natural history collection of mounted animals, butterflies, fossils, eggs and more. Try your hand at classification with the make-your-own-museum activity. Look for birds you have seen around your neighborhood.
Kinetic Sculpture (Basement, Green Wing) – a giant maze of rolling balls. Big and little people alike are spellbound watching the balls roll through the maze.
