The
UNIVAC I computer room. |
WHY?: LINEAGE
Univac I
Nowadays, personal computers are everywhere.
In our homes, offices, and pockets. But until quite recently, there
were many different kinds of computers. Commercial computers, scientific
computers, supercomputers, workstations. Personal computers have
taken over most of the jobs these machines did.
UNIVAC I was one of the first commercial
mainframe computers, safely locked in a climate controlled room,
tended by specially-trained technicians. If you were around in 1952,
this is probably as close as you'd ever get to a computer
looking through the glass into the computer room.
